Thanks for the insightful comments. A couple of years ago, we started admitting arts grads. We found they took awhile to learn the science but they brought their humanism to the profession as a plus. We moved to a patient's centered, interprofessional curriculum as a result.
I just had an interesting conversation with my brother-in-law who is an ER doc in the States. He is appaled at how many ER docs have poor patient interaction skills and thinks its because in physician centered medicine there is so much emphasis on diagnosis and technique that the patient is often forgotten in the shuffle.
